Arthur Haynes

Great British comic.

Haynes, who worked as a bus conductor and part-time singer before the outbreak of World War II entertained the troops as part of ENSA . He was spotted by Charlie Chester and hired initially as a bit-player for his BBC radio show, Stand Easy.

Haynes made his television debut in The George and Alfred Black Show in 1956 and soon after was offered his own show. The Arthur Haynes Show (1957–1966) was scripted by Johnny Speight and featured Nicholas Parsons as his stooge.

By 1960 Haynes was the highest paid comedian on television and in 1961 was voted Television Performer of the Year.

He made two films – Strange Bedfellows (1964 a sex comedy starring Gina Lollobrigida) and Doctor in Clover (1966).

Haynes died suddenly of a heart attack after a cabaret season at the Grosvenor Hotel in London in 1966.
