Labour party statesman.

Dalton was the bitter enemy of Neville Chamberlain and strongly opposed his policy of appeasement. Churchill appointed him to his Wartime Cabinet as Minister of Economic Warfare (1940-1942) and he made a notable contribution to the war effort with his establishment of the Special Operations Executive in 1940. The SOE’s mission was espionage, sabotage and reconnaissance in Occupied Europe and Churchill’s instruction to it was “to set Europe ablaze”.

Dalton was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer in the post-war Labour government but was forced to resign in 1947 when he leaked the contents of his budget in an off-the cuff remark to a journalist on his way into the Commons.

This is a typed letter on a
5.25" x 4.5" sheet of House of Commons notepaper (2nd July, 1953), sending a fine signature in red ink to a fan. The letter has clearly been trimmed to its present size but overall condition is very good.
