Great British conductor.

Beecham founded several British orchestra, including the New Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. He is often taken to be the finest British conductor of the early to mid-twentieth century.

Beecham was a great champion of several composers, including Delius, Ethel Smyth and Sibelius. He often presented slight pieces in their best light as encores, and this gave rise to the expression “Beecham’s lollipops” (a reference to the pills that made his family’s fortune).

Beecham was known as a great wit, and there are many anecdotes involving him. It is said that at one rehearsal he was dissatisfied with the performance of a solo female cellist and said to her “Madam, you have between your legs an instrument capable of giving pleasure to thousands, and all you do is scratch it.” Still more famous is the response Beecham is reported to have made when asked whether he had ever conducted any Stockhausen: “No, but I believe I once trod in some!”

This is a superb matt-finish sepia photograph (8" x 5.75") of the young Thomas Beecham by The Dover Street Studios, neatly signed in black fountain pen ink beneath the image. One tiny mark in the lower right corner but otherwise in very good condition. RARE.
