English music-hall song and dance performer, billed originally as “The Boy With The Educated Feet”.

Wall made his first London appearance in 1925, as a dancer in The London Revue and went on to work in variety, revue, pantomime and radio. He made his name in the radio programme Our Shed (1946), which started as part of the wartime show Hoop-La! (1944-1945).

Wall gradually perfected his own distinctive laconic comedy routine and is generally regarded as having been one of the most accomplished British comics of his time.

In later life Wall became an accomplished character actor, appearing on stage in 1966 in Ubu Roi and subsequently making a speciality of the plays of Samuel Beckett. He appeared in a notable one-man show, Aspects of Max Wall, in 1974. On television he acted in the comedy series Born and Bred (1978, 1980).

Wall’s films include Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968), One of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing (1975), The Hound of the Baskervilles (1978), Hanover Street (1979) and Little Dorrit (1988).

This is a superb vintage black and white 7" x 5" photograph of the young Max Wall, nicely signed and inscribed in blue fountain pen ink, with Wall adding the date, 1940.
There are some tiny marks on the top edge (probably from a paperclip) but these detract very little from this rare comedy collectable, which is in excellent condition.
