| Stocky, benevolent-looking Welsh character actor.
After graduating from RADA (he'd been a medical student before deciding upon an acting career), Johns spent several years as a touring actor in England, Australia and South Africa before making his first film appearance in Lady in Danger (1935).
His credits include Jamaica Inn (1939), Went The Day Well? (1942), The Halfway House (with his young daughter, Glynis Johns, 1944), Dead of Night (1945), Captain Boycott (1947), Alastair Sim’s classic Scrooge (as Bob Cratchit, 1951), John Huston's Moby Dick (as Captain Peleg, 1956), 1984 (1956), Never Let Go (1960), The Sundowners (1960), The Rebel (1961), The Day of the Triffids (1962), 55 Days at Peking (1963) and many others.
This is a splendid 14" x 11" black and white vintage photograph of the younger Mervyn Johns, boldly signed in blue ink to a clear area of the image. (The scan shows most of the image, though not all). In very good condition. VERY RARE in this size. |
