The writer of 25 novels, 150 short stories and 12 non-fiction books, Georgia-born Caldwell is best known for his writings about poverty, racism, cruelty and in his native South. His 1932 novel Tobacco Road became a Broadway play that ran for 8 years and God's Little Acre (1933) sold over 14 million copies; both were made into feature films, in 1941 and 1958 respectively. In all, the prolific author sold some 80 million copies of his works in 43 languages,
