Mexican-born French tenor.

After first attracting international attention in 1999, when he won second prize in Placido Domingo’s Operalia competition, Villazon steadily built his reputation, culminating in his debut at London's Royal Opera House in 2004 in Les Contes d'Hoffmann. He was much in demand after that, especially when a recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon led to a much-hyped pairing with the Russian soprano Anna Netrebko. But in 2007, something began to go horribly wrong with his voice. A growing cyst was eventually diagnosed as the cause, and in spring 2009, he announced he would be undergoing surgery.

A long recovery followed, and it wasn’t until March 2010 that he returned to the concert stage, in L'Elisir d'Amore at the Vienna State Opera in March 2010. In the UK, his comeback was in Werther at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in spring 2011.
In recent years, Villazon has undertaken a number of Mozart tenor roles both in concert and in operatic performances
