Yorkshire-born composer.

Wood studied at the Royal College of Music, London, and worked for a time in music halls. He wrote prolifically and his output of orchestral works including 15 suites, 9 rhapsodies, 8 overtures, 3 big concertante pieces and nearly 50 other assorted items; six choral compositions, some chamber music - notably a string quartet and over a dozen instrumental solos - 7 song cycles and something in excess of 200 individual songs. That said, he is most famous for one Great War song, Roses of Picardy, (1916) which earned him over £100,000, a truly vast sum for those days and the equivalent today of £4 million!

This is an interesting letter to the BBC, handwritten and signed in ink on a sheet of blindstamped personal correspondence paper (9 Bickenhall Mansions, W1, March 16, 1953), asking them to broadcast more of his music.

It reads:

I have written and had published a considerable amount of serious music, so I am venturing to write and ask you if I may have a broadcast of some of it. I am enclosing three suggested programmes.

Over the years all of these works have been broadcast. With the exception of the overture "Minerva" they are all published.

Hoping I may have a favourable reply.

There are two torn filing holes and staple holes in the top left corner but overall condition is good.
