British actress, wife
of Raymond Massey from 1929 to 1939 and mother of Daniel and Anna
Allen was very selective in the parts she chose. For nearly two years during the Second World War, she starred with George Cole on stage in the original London production of Terence Rattigan’s Flare Path.
Between 1947 and 1954, she made a further five films, including Bond Street (1947), Vote for Huggett (1949) and Meet Mr Malcolm (her last, 1954). In 1957, she returned to Broadway (after an absence of eight years) to star with Wilfred Hyde White and her daughter, Anna Massey, in The Reluctant Debutante.
In the late 1950s Allen retired from show business, moving to Switzerland with her second husband.Allen’s marital affairs were odd. Adrianne and Raymond Massey were great friends of William and Dorothy Whitney, who were divorced in the late 1930s. William was an International lawyer, and Adrianne went to him for the divorce. Shortly after the divorce of Ardianne and Raymond, William & Adrianne married, as did Raymond & Dorothy Whitney, and all lived happily ever after.
This is a very pretty vintage black and white photograph (5.25" x 3.5") from the late 1940s, nicely signed in ink to the lower white panel. In very good condition.
