William IV,   (1786-1837)
William IV, King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and of Hanover from 26th June 1830 until his death.
A fascinating envelope front, signed in ink in the lower left corner as the Duke of Clarence.
William was married to Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen and had two daughters with her. The future king had a roving eye, however, and he had a further 11 illegitimate childen with his mistress Dorothea Jordan (all the children had the surname FitzClarence.)
This envelope front is addressed to his illegitimate son, Adolphus FitzClarence (1802-1856) and is dated 1813, when Adolphus was just 11 years old.
The content of the missing letter may have referred to Adolphus being sent to sea at that age on board HMS Impregnable, a 98-gun ship of the line (a career in the Navy followed until 1830, when he was put in charge of the Royal Yacht, Royal George.)
