Garrick, David   (1717-1779)
Garrick, David Great British actor, theatre-manager and playwright, who revolutionised acting and the English stage in the 18th Century; a close friend of Dr Johnson.
Five lines of David Garrick's handwriting in ink, on an irregularly cut piece measuring 7" x 2.75" (at its largest), laid down in Victorian times to a larger 7" x 4.25" piece. The original collector has added a note in ink ("The above is David Garrick's autograph* 10 August 1753").
* In Victorian times , any handwriting was regarded as the "autograph" of a person; the name itself was the "signature". Specimens of handwriting were collected as avidly as the signature.

Gavin, John
Handsome American actor who achieved cinematic immortality by appearing in two classics in supporting roles, as Janet Leigh's lover in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho and as Julius Caesar in Stanley Kubrick's Spartacus (1960).
A fine copy of Stagebill  (July, 1974), featuring a production of the musical Seesaw at the John Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The cast page has been signed in by John Gavin and also by his co-stars, Tommy Tune (b.1939) and Lucie Arnaz (b.1951, daughter of the great Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz).

Gay, Noel   (1898-1954)
Gay, Noel Prolific Yorkshire-born composer of popular music in the 1930s and 1940s (he wrote the music for 28 films, 26 London stage shows and 45 songs); once described as "the closest Britain ever came to a local Irving Berlin.”
In the 1930s there was an autograph collector called Louis Ollier. Ollier was also a talented artist and it was his practice to do excellent pen and ink drawings of celebrities and send them to be signed and returned. Apparently nobody refused. This item comes from Ollier's collection - a superb original pen and ink drawing of Noel Gay on a 7" x 10" sheet of white cartridge paper. Gay has signed and dated the drawing (11.3.39) in dark blue ink, also adding a fine musical quotation.

American television writer, playwright, screenwriter, director and author, most famous for his role in the creation of the hugely successful television series M*A*S*H, writing the pilot (for which he received a "Developed for Television by __" credit); then producing, often writing and occasionally directing the series for its first four seasons, from 1972 to 1976.
